ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The College is attached to the Physiotherapy Department of Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai General Hospital catering more than 400 patients per day on OPD basis. Patients from all specialities are referred here for Physiotherapy treatment.All patients referred from here are assessed by senior faculties of the college and treatment planned according to the recent advances of the field. The Department is grossly divided into mainly 4 specialities.
ORTHOPEDIC REHABILITATION DEPARTMENT
Orthopedic rehabilitation department consists of the gymnasium and electrotherapy departments. It caters to all traumatic & non traumatic orthopedic conditions referred from orthopedic OPD.
The department is headed by Dr.Nehal Shah who has an experience of more than 21 years in this field. She has attended many seminars on advanced techniques in orthopedic rehabilitation. She has presented many talks pertaining to recent research based assessment & management of orthopedic physiotherapy techniques in various conferences and seminars. Other senior faculties working with this department are Dr Komal Shah with more than 20 years of experience, Dr Ketan Pandya with more than 17 years of experience, Dr Nipa Shah with more than 10 years of experience, Dr Binal Gajjar with 10 years of experience and Dr Rajendra Modiya with 9 years of experience
The gymnasium is well-equipped to rehabilitate subjects affected with adhesive capsulitis/ Frozen shoulder, back & neck pain, osteoarthritis of Knee & bone fractures and many other rare orthopedic conditions. It also provides advanced rehabilitation in post operative conditions of ligament repairs, joint replacements & peripheral nerve injuries.
Clinical decision making is based on detailed assessment of subject and the use of highly reliable & valid tools like hand held dynamometer, finger flexion gauge, pressure algometer and hand evaluation kit.
Management techniques include conventional and advanced mobilization techniques like Maitland, Mulligan, Neurodynamic techniques, trigger point release therapy, Soft tissue manipulation techniques, Taping techniques etc. It has a modern hand rehab unit, pressure biofeedback, swiss ball, bosu ball, Continuous passive movement machine, thera bands, thera tubes, treadmill, stationary cycle, pressure biofeed back unit and many such gadgets to treat patients effectively.
Extensive proprioceptive training needed in Orthopedic conditions is judiciously practiced and that is followed by complete gait training program in Parallel bar with mirror, ramp & stairs to achieve complete functional independence of patient is provided.
ELECTROTHERAPY DEPARTMENT
The department is well equipped with conventional & advanced equipments like Short wave diathermy, Long wave diathermy,cervical and lumbar traction units, Electrical stimulators, Ultrasound, Trans cutaneous electrical nerve stimulator, Interferential therapy, Paraffin Wax bath, Hot and Cold packs,Magnetodyne therapy, Shock Wave therapy, Combination Therapy, LASER, Whirlpool bath, Cryotherapy machine , Electromyogtraphy Biofeedback unit.
Detailed assessment for appropriate modality and ideal dosage are the backbone of the department.
Future plan – The department aims to expand with all modern and hi-tech equipments in future like TECAR therapy, Biofeedback equipment for smooth muscle training, High Power LASER therapy etc
ADULT & PEDIATRIC NEURO REHABILITATION DEPARTMENT
Neurological rehabilitation department takes care of adult neurological conditions like traumatic & non traumatic brain (stroke/hemiplegia )as well as spinal cord injuries, parkinson’s disease, cerebellar ataxia, , various kinds of polyneuropathies etc. Pediatric neurological rehabilitation department provides rehabilitation for conditions like cerebral palsy, erb’s palsy, autism, ADHD, muscular dystrophies , hydrocephalus, meningomyelocele etc. Department caters more than 150 patients per day on OPD basis.
The department is headed by Dr. Shraddha Diwan who has an experience of 18 years in this field. She has attended many seminars on comprehensive rehabilitation of Cerebral palsy & other specialized techniques of the same. She has conducted CMEs related to early intervention, assessment & management techniques on cerebral palsy & autism.
The department is well equipped with Neurodevelopment therapy based instruments & sensory integration based hanging equipments. The department has audio-visual stimulation room to enhance vision. The department is associated with Neuro Developmental Follow-up clinic of V.S. General Hospital for comprehensive assessment of high risk infants for developmental delay. Therapists here provide most recent treatment techniques in neurorehabilitation like Neurodevelopment therap, Sensory integration, Balance and gait training, hand rehabilitation and functional training. Oromotor stimulation of neonates is one of the major forte of the therapists working over here and hence they treat patients of Pediatric and Neonatal ICU of VS general Hospital. Department is well equipped with Motorized treadmill, Body weight support treadmill training, Static and resisted cycling, equipments for Neurodevelopment therapy and Sensory Integration
Dr. Zarna Shah is looking after the adult neuro rehabilitation department along with Dr Shraddha. She has experience of 9 years experience
Future plan – The department aims to expand with all modern and hi-tech equipments in future like virtual reality training equipment , Functional Electrical Stimulation, Balance Board with sensors and display to assess and treat Balance and neuromuscular issues.
ADVANCED ELECTRO DIAGNOSIS DEPARTMENT
The department has a well developed EMG NCV lab with an expert faculty Dr Nehal Shah trained and certified in USA. This set up is used to diagnose neurogenic & myogenic conditions like entrapment neuropatheis, Nerve injuries, polyneuropathies, Motor Neuron Diseases, muscular dystrophies, Myasthenia gravis etc. Studies like NCV, EMG, Repetitive Nerve Stimulation studies are conducted here since 2004. Around 350 patients a year visit the department for diagnostic purpose.
Dr. Nehal Shah is a qualified EMG practitioner certified by American Academy of Clinical Electrodiagnosis. She has been working in this field since 2000. She is accompanied by Dr. Megha Sheth who has been working with her since last 5 years.
In future we look to develop a quantitative EMG lab which can be used for various research analysis purpose
COMMUNITY PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT
Department is headed by Dr Megha Sheth who is a post graduate in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and has a vast experience of more than 25 years. She manages the rehabilitation of Geriatric population with musculoskeletal problems and pain. She has written a chapter in the book Community Based rehabilitation. Dr Payal Gahlot with more than 10 years of experience in the field is taking care of the department along with Dr Megha Sheth.
CARDIAC & PULMONARY REHABILITATION DEPARTMENT
Department is managed by three senior faculties, Dr Sweety Shah with more than 18 years of experience, Dr Harita Vyas with more than 16 years of experience and Dr Deepmala Silajiya with more than 12 years of experience in the field of Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy.
It includes cardiac & pulmonary rehabilitation including inward as well as outdoor patients & Fitness training.
Assessment is done by Pulmonary Function Testing, Electronic body fat calculator, Telemetry monitor, Pulse oximeter, PEFR etc along with basic clinical examination.
Management is done using instruments like Treadmills, Cross trainers, Multi gym, Flutter , Acapella, Inspiratory muscle trainer, Incentive spirometer, Nebulizer.
Patients post coronary artery bypass grafting & other cardiac events are being managed under supervision in various phases of cardiac rehabilitation. Pulmonary rehabilitation is being managed for conditions like COPD, asthma etc. Inward post operative patients are seen for chest physiotherapy.
